  • How to make Buttermilk at Home

What is buttermilk? How to make buttermilk? I show you how. Originally buttermilk is the liquid left over after churning butter from cream Today, it is done with fermentation. Bacteria transform lactose into lactic acid. Lactic acid gives buttermilk its characteristic tangy flavor and helps thicken it. It is commonly used as a marinade for fried chicken and other foods. It is also believed to have health benefits, such as aiding in digestion and promoting overall gut health. Buttermilk is used as an ingredient for baking, since the acidity it contains helps to improve the texture, providing moisture, flavor and making fluffy recipes. The acid in buttermilk can help break down the gluten in the flour, which can make baked goods more tender. As I mentioned before, buttermilk is the liquid left over after churning butter from cream. But since we don't have access to it that easy, unless you make the butter at home which would be perfect or buy the buttermilk at the store. So here I show you how to make a buttermilk substitute at home: To 1 cup of whole milk at room temperature add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Mix until combined and let sit for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, mix and you can use it in your recipes. I like to use this white vinegar method since I always have it at home and it is less expensive. There are 3 other ways to make homemade buttermilk. 1 cup of whole milk + 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 cup whole milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 cup whole milk + 1 3/4 tsp cream of tartar I love using buttermilk in cakes, cupcakes and pancakes. Give it a try!
